Trans Failsafe Prog

Im reveiving a error message saying Trans.failsafe prog.
My car has an automatic transmission.

BMW X5 Trans Fail Safe Program, My Bmw x5 2001 Display shows Trans Fail Safe Mode, Truck drives verry sluggish up until around 45+ mph. Then it picks up speed and drives normal. Reverse is fine, seems to be an electrical or sensor issue because it just came out of nowhere. Quick video to show the symptoms I had when my e39 540i Auto got the trans failsafe prog error. Car wouldn't' go into gear and sometimes wouldn't even start.

It means that the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) has detected a problem in the transmission itself or in one of the devices or sensors that controls it. The ECU then substitutes whatever information its not getting with a fixed value so the transmission can continue to operate in spite of the failure. You may notice the car behaves differently, or you may not notice any problem at all depending on where the failure lies. When this occures, the ECU stores codes for the failed components that can be read by a technician with the appropriate scanner. In that way the technician knows where to go with the diagnostic process.
